Ukrainian Week is coming to IHMS!
Students celebrate the Legends of the Carpathians, March 24-28

What do mountains, sheep, strange musical instruments, vibrant woven blankets and a “Robin Hood” have in common? Students at Immaculate Heart of Mary School (IHMS) invite you to find out, as they celebrate the legends and culture of Ukraine’s Carpathian Mountains, or Karpaty.
Every March, students, teachers, volunteers and guest artists explore and celebrate an aspect of Ukrainian culture. Students spend the month immersed in activities related to the theme, which culminates in a Ukrainian-language concert performed by the entire student body.
Ukrainian Week, March 24-28 2025, will focus on the land of the Hutsuls, one of three main groups of people who occupy the Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine. Because of the relative isolation of the mountains, the Hutsul’s way of life, dress, food, music, language and many traditions differ from those of other Ukrainians.
“Since our school was founded 119 years ago, it has played an important role in nurturing Ukrainian culture and traditions across our diverse student community,” says Rod Picklyk, Principal, IHMS. “This is even more vital in building pride and understanding, as more than 100 students have joined the IHMS family since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022. Canadian students have an opportunity to learn more about our rich Ukrainian heritage, and Ukrainian-born students can maintain their cultural values and language.”
Family and friends are invited to attend the concert, Legends of the Carpathians / Lehendy Karpat:
When: Thursday, March 27, 1:00 p.m. or 7 p.m.
Where: Immaculate Heart of Mary School, 650 Flora Ave
